The Butterfield Overland Mail Co. was the first American business to provide transcontinental mail delivery and passenger service from St. Louis to San Francisco, one of the major steps forward in tying the eastern United States with the west and making good the manifest destiny of America.

    1. I am not aware of a Fort Defiant. There were several Fort Defiances in various states – Arizona, Texas, Illinois and Iowa – but the Butterfield Trail did not run through any of them. Fort Defiance, Arizona, was probably the closest, but even it was about 230 miles off the Butterfield Route. That’s not to say that there weren’t stage companies serving Fort Defiance. There were many stage lines that provided connection to the Butterfield Route.
